Locking feature.

Wed, 08 Apr 2020 15:27:10 GMT

I just emailed this question, but then I saw you were currently online. I was wondering If you were bringing your locking feature back, and if not, what would you suggest doing in order to keep them from shifting so much? My wife had the old version, and it was the best feature of Aeon. I saw that years ago you discussed the possibility, but as it's not been updated, I'm assuming no.

Hi, You will be glad to hear that we are still planning to bring back locking of events, it will be included in the next version we are currently working on. Jess

Hi Jess. I was wondering when the event locking functionality will be available please? I'm running version 2.3.16. Cheers - Graham.

Hi Graham, We are hoping to get the next version out later this year or early next year. Jess

I am desperate to have locking back. I am working on a complicated historical narrative, and events keep sliding around unintentionally. I have no idea why they are being dragged. Undo does not always work when this happens. Have lost work and it is frustrating.

Is there an ETA on the new version? If not within the month, I think I need to find a different solution.

Hi, The ETA for the next version is within the next couple of months, unfortunately we can't narrow it down more than that at this point. However on the current version your events shouldn't be moving unintentionally , and if they are moving, undo should move them back (unless you are talking about the vertical spacing of events, which is an automated process, therefore adding new events can change their vertical layout. However the horizontal placing (ie. the dates of events) shouldn't change). What operating system are you using, and what device are you using the scroll the timeline and move events (eg. mouse, trackpad etc.)? Have you noticed that they tend to move more when you are doing a particular action (eg. when you are scrolling through the timeline, or when you are dragging events?) Jess

It happens when I am just scrolling horizontally through the timeline, or moving vertically to view different arcs. It happens infrequently when I am using a mouse, but if I use the trackpad it happens enough to really mess up my work. Events just get picked up and dragged even though I have not selected them––similar to what others have described on these boards. A vertical line appears saying "shift events ## years." (Btw, I do not really ever even intentionally want to drag events, because I'm a historian and I'm working with events that are all fixed when I enter them. I would love to be able disable dragging completely.) When this happens, sometimes undo is available, other times it is grayed out. But even when it "works" it is not helpful because I can't always be sure what has moved that is not visible on my screen at that moment in a large timeline. For example, I noticed an event had seemingly disappeared, but I found it randomly moved a decade or so away . This shouldn't be a trackpad issue, because I don't have trackpad malfunctions like this in other applications. I'm on a Macbook pro, Catalina 10.15.7. I'm using Aeon Timeline 2 Version 2.3.16.

Hi, Unfortunately we have been unable to reproduce this issue on our end yet. It potentially could be that it is something specific to your trackpad and it is detecting clicks when scrolling if it is particularly sensitive, which other programs might be ignoring. Even though the next version will contain locked events, hopefully the issue will also be resolved as some of the internals of the scrolling functionality have been rewritten. Jess
